More information regarding the schedule and meeting point of the first/last day will be provided after booking.

day 1

Negombo

NEGOMBO

Welcome to Sri Lanka. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6:00 PM this evening in Negombo. If you arrive early, you might take a walk along the beach and observe some of the local fishing boats. Perhaps explore the beautiful surrounding countryside by bicycle, which you can rent at your hotel's reception. Tonight, you could go out for dinner with your fellow travelers and get to know each other over a couple of drinks. You will spend the night near the beach, just steps away from numerous beach bars and pubs.
No meals are included on this day. Flight not included. It is essential to attend the welcome meeting to gather insurance details and emergency contacts. If you are delayed, inform your travel agent or the hotel reception. To find out where the meeting will take place, ask at the reception or look for a note in the lobby.

day 2

Dambulla

DAMBULLA

Head to the fish market in Negombo this morning - it can be quite chaotic, but the variety of fish displayed by the locals offers an excellent insight into the local culture. From there, you will proceed to Dambulla - the second major center of the Matale District. An optional activity today is a visit to Sigiriya - an ancient rock fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the palace ruins located on top of a massive 200-meter-high rock (a volcanic plug of an extinct volcano) surrounded by the remnants of an extensive system of gardens and water reservoirs. If you decide to take on this activity, you'll want to bring your camera, as the photo opportunities are endless! If you wish, your group leader can take you out for dinner (not included) tonight at a local restaurant to taste delicious local cuisine.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not included. Transfers included. Excursions included. Optional activities not included.
Today's travel time will be about 3.5 hours.

day 3

KANDY

This morning, you will have the option to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple (also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla) – a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of various temples built inside five different caves under a rocky overhang. Explore the paintings, statues, and mural frescoes of this fascinating place, after which we will continue towards Kandy, making a stop at a local spice garden in Matale along the way. When you arrive in Kandy, enjoy a free afternoon. Perhaps take part in a cooking class and learn to prepare some of the local dishes you've now come to love!
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not included. Transfers included. Excursions included. Optional activities not included.
During their stay in Kandy, travelers who book the same room might be split into different rooms, as the hostel has separate dormitories by gender.

day 4

KANDY

Today after breakfast we will have a free day. If you want to relax, you could book an Ayurvedic massage to rejuvenate those tired muscles. Kandy features a picturesque lake, some great ancient shops, a lively market, and some excellent restaurants, so there's plenty to see and do on your day off today. Once the capital under the last king of Sri Lanka, this area managed to resist European control for hundreds of years, long after the coastal areas had surrendered. Perhaps you can take a walk through the city to admire the sights of Kandy, head to the Royal Botanical Gardens, visit the Temple of the Tooth, or book a cultural dance performance.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Optional activities not included.

day 5

train to ella

ELLA

This morning, say goodbye to Kandy and board a train to Ella. This train journey is quite famous for its stunning views along the route of lush, green landscapes and surrounding mountains (so, if you can, get a seat by the window!). It's a long trip, but you can buy all sorts of snacks from the vendors on board. When you arrive, consider visiting the local tea factory or grab a drink at one of the many bars. Tonight, your guide can help you with the best spots for nightlife: maybe grab a couple of friends and head to a nearby local restaurant that boasts live music and delicious food.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Transfers included. Optional activities not included.
Today's travel time will be around 6 hours.
Train tickets are in high demand. We always try our best to secure the tickets, but on the rare occasions when we can't book them, you will continue your journey in a private vehicle.

day 6

train to ella

ELLA

Today you will embark on a half-day trekking adventure to Ella Gap. Be active and traverse the green mountain slopes for some fresh air. Along the way, stop in a small village for a spicy curry lunch at a local family's home. Get to know your charming hosts as you dine together and refresh yourself with a steaming pot of Ceylon tea to wash it all down. This is the perfect opportunity to get up close with the locals, learn about their lifestyle, and exchange stories. After the hike, the rest of the day is free for you to explore on your own.
Breakfast and lunch included. Dinner not included. Transfers included. Excursions included.

day 7

Tissamaharama

TISSAMAHARAMA

Leave from Ella this morning in a private vehicle for Tissamaharama. Once you arrive, you will set off on an exciting 4x4 safari through the Yala National Park, where you'll encounter the native wildlife of the area: watch out for elephants, leopards, and waterbirds. Make sure to bring your camera and stay hydrated! Tonight, as you reflect on a super fun day, why not go out with your travel companions in search of appa (hoppers), kottu roti, and parippu (lentil curry)?
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Transfers included. Excursions included.
Tourism in Sri Lanka is growing rapidly, leading to an increase in visitors to Yala National Park. Intrepid is concerned about overcrowding and the lack of sustainable practices, so it is testing visits to Block 5 or Veheragala, a less touristy area of the park. If Block 5 also becomes too crowded, the itinerary will be changed to visit Udawalawe National Park, which is home to elephants, buffalo, sambar deer, and leopards.
From September to October, during Yala's annual closure for maintenance, it is possible to participate in jeep safaris in Udawalawe National Park.

day 8

sea at Unawatuna

UNAWATUNA

This morning, travel west in a private vehicle to Unawatuna: this stretch of beach has many local restaurants and bars where you can relax. Along the way, stop at Galle and embark on a walking tour with your local guide, perhaps grabbing lunch to refuel. Afterwards, arrive at your destination where you will have free time to explore Unawatuna and its surroundings at your own pace.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Transfers included. Excursions included.
Today's travel time will be around 3.5 hours.

day 9

Unawatuna

UNAWATUNA

Today is all about the beach! Grab a good book, order a cocktail, and don't forget the bottle of sunscreen – today is for resting, relaxing, and stretching out on the warm sands of Sri Lanka. If you want, you can also book an optional whale watching tour or go 'bikesploring' in the lesser-known areas of the city on two wheels. Take advantage of the numerous beachfront restaurants and bars lining the shore tonight after an epic sunset.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Optional activities not included. The transportation costs for today's whale watching activity depend on the number of participants and will be communicated by your guide on the day of booking.

day 10

Colombo city skyline

COLOMBO

Leave Unawatuna behind and head to Galle, where you'll board a local train to Colombo. Upon arriving in the capital of Sri Lanka, set off on a city walk with your guide. Along the way, visit local shops and do some sightseeing. Afterwards, you might explore the collection of temples and churches that live side by side: in addition to the stunning architecture, this is also a great example of how different belief systems and places of worship can come together side by side, creating a sense of community and peace. Tonight is free, but your guide will suggest an optional group dinner for your last night together. Afterward, why not seek out the perfect spot to toast to a greatly appreciated journey?
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not provided. Transfers included. Excursions included.
Today's travel time will be around 4 hours.
It is not possible to guarantee a seat on today's local train and it is subject to availability. Since train tickets cannot be booked before the day of travel, during peak times your group may travel to Colombo by bus.

day 11
